Cochineal Natural Dye Workshop with Porfirio Gutiérrez
Saturday, April 24, 2021, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
$550 per person ($250 tax-deductible)
Limited to only 6 participants
On the occasion of Porfirio Gutiérrez’s upcoming solo exhibition Continuous Line, Linea Continua, recipient of the 2021 Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize, this workshop is an introduction to Porfirio’s technique and it is open to all skill levels. We will be using cochineal, an insect dye, with each participant leaving with a scarf that they have dyed themselves. As a special bonus, the workshop will include a special Oaxacan meal and a Mezcal tasting. The workshop studio space is open to the outdoors and masks and social distancing will be enforced at all times.
Porfirio Gutiérrez is also an artist advisor for the exhibition Cosmovisión Indígena: The Intersection of Indigenous Knowledge and Contemporary Art, part of the Getty Foundation’s 2024 Pacific Standard Time Initiative, and in partnership with the Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College and the Santa Barbara Office of Arts and Culture.
