Crisis, Interdependence and the Fabric of Compassion

The unprecedented crisis which has been brought about by Covid-19 has revealed to the whole world what
Theosophical teachings have upheld from time immemorial: interdependence is an essential part of humanity’s
evolution and the whole of existence. In this series we will probe into the meaning and purpose of crises, and
how the current pandemic has brought to the surface the truth that no one lives or dies for himself or herself.
An intrinsic part of this enquiry is how every crisis, including violence, can contribute to the awakening of
compassion, and can become the teacher and the guide – even through unspeakably challenging times.

Linda Oliveira holds a degree in humanities and political science from the Australian National University. A
member since 1971, she served as International Vice-President of the Theosophical Society from October 2008
until late 2011 residing in Adyar, the Society’s International Headquarters in India for most of this time. She has
also occupied the positions of National President of the Australian Section of the Society and Editor of Theosophy
in Australia. Linda has presented for the TS internationally, and has contributed to several TS journals. A core
inspiration in her life is Theosophy – especially its potential to profoundly transform an individual when reflected
upon deeply, and when practiced with heart and mind.
Pedro Oliveira, born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1957, holds a degree in Philosophy from the Federal University of
Rio Grande do Sul. Having joined the Theosophical Society in 1978 in Brazil, he served as International Secretary
at the TS Headquarters at Adyar, Chennai, India from 1992 to 1996. Other posts include Education
Coordinator of the TS in Australia, President of the Indo-Pacific Federation of the TS, and more recently as
Officer-in-charge of the Editorial Office at Adyar. Pedro has lectured internationally on the perennial wisdom,
spirituality, mysticism, and comparative religion. He has written for the Society’s international journals and has
authored N. Sri Ram: A Life of Beneficence and Wisdom (TPH, Adyar, 2009), C.W.L. Speaks: C.W. Leadbeater’s
Correspondence Concerning the 1906 Crisis in the Theosophical Society (2018), and the forthcoming book, Annie
Besant in India. His articles have appeared in several of the Society’s international journals.
