SUMMARY:OJAI PERFORMING ARTS THEATER - Harvey
DESCRIPTION:If you drove through the Ojai Valley in the spring of 2020\, you may remember seeing several six-foot colorful rabbits standing tall in strategic places in the community\, placed there when “Harvey” was scheduled to open in the spring of 2020 under the care of the Ojai Performing Arts Theater (OPAT). Well\, they’re ba-a-a-a-c-k! \nThe bunnies have been hibernating since COVID reared its ugly head\, but they have been well-attended\, well-nourished\, and remain as dapper as ever. Look for them around town as they stand tall and welcome this play back to its rightful place on the stage of Matilija Auditorium. By the way\, in 2020\, six rabbits took their places\, but a few days after they appeared\, one disappeared. Who could’ve taken it? His five companion rabbits will welcome him back if anyone knows where it is\, no questions asked! \nJoan Kemper\, the CEO of OPAT\, is thrilled to have the bunnies around town again because they signify the return of the play\, “Harvey.” “It is one of my favorite plays of all time\, one\, because it’s funny\, and two\, because it offers a heartfelt portrayal of what it is to be human in a world that sometimes tries to diminish one’s humanity.” \nAfter being in seclusion for two years\, the rabbits are happy to welcome back the cast\, crew\, and the spectacular set for this play\, designed by Kenny Dahle. “The set has been carefully stored over at Chaparral all this time\, and it’s ready for its close-up\,” says Kemper. \nThe play is co-directed by Tony-Award winner Craig Anderson and the Artistic Director of OPAT\, Richard Camp. OPAT continues its giving policy with a portion of the play’s proceeds benefiting Help of Ojai. \n“Harvey” won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1945 over Tennessee Williams’s classic “The Glass Menagerie.” The play became a movie starring the delightful Jimmy Stewart in the role of Elwood P. Dowd. Dr. Jim Halverson will take on that role in this production. \n“Dr. Jim will be just as delightful\,” promises Kemper. “He’s had two years to learn his lines\, so it’ll be a piece of cake for him. Or should I say a piece of rabbit food?'” Most of the cast has remained intact\, and the actors are delighted to finally bring this long-awaited production to life. \n“Harvey” will run at Matilija Auditorium April 1- 3 and April 8-10. Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30\, Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Following county guidelines\, all audience members will need to show proof they are fully vaccinated. Tickets are available at ojaitheater.org or call (805) 640-5814. All reserved seating with the chart on website.
